So get ready for some jammy goodness, effortless dough, and a Valentine Cholocate twist that involves everyone's favorite - Nutella.

Jam Filling: Love in Every Bite

The heart of any hand pie lies in its filling, and what better way to celebrate the season of love than with a burst of fruity goodness? My Valentine hand pie recipe starts with a luscious jam filling that will make your taste buds do the tango. And I even add a little crumbled goat cheese for a bit of extra deliciousness. The cheese os optional but pretty darn yummy!

Spread the Love: Crafting the Perfect Jam Filling

Begin with your favorite fruit jam; strawberry and raspberry work like a charm. It's like setting the stage for a romantic dinner – you need the perfect backdrop. Spread the jam onto the heart, but leave the edges free so they seal, ensuring that each bite is a symphony of sweetness.

Using Premade Pie Dough Makes it Easy:

Because we all don’t have time to make dough from scratch!

Now that we've got our jammy canvas ready, it's time to talk dough – the unsung hero of our Valentine's hand pies. Let's face it; not all of us are born pastry chefs. But fear not, for we have a secret weapon in our arsenal – premade pie dough. Who needs the stress of making dough from scratch when the supermarket has your back? Grab that pre-rolled pie dough, and you're halfway to becoming a dessert hero. Unroll it, cut out those heart shapes with a cookie cutter and voilà – you've just earned your pastry stripes. Your secret is safe with me.

A Valentine Chocolate Variation Using Nutella: Because Chocolate is the Real MVP

Now, let's turn up the heat and add a touch of indulgence to our hand pies. Brace yourselves for a Nutella-infused variation that takes these treats from sweet to swoon-worthy. Swap out that traditional jam filling for a generous dollop of Nutella. Yes, you read that right – we're taking a detour to Chocolateville. The hazelnutty goodness of Nutella combined with the flaky pie crust is a match made in dessert heaven. It's like a love letter to your taste buds, written in the language of chocolate. Mmmmm.

Your Turn to Share the Love

And there you have it – a Valentine's hand pie recipe that's as simple as it is scrumptious. Whether you opt for the classic jam-filled version or take a walk on the Valentine's chocolate side with Nutella, these hand pies will surely steal hearts.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper and set aside.
  3. Whisk the egg with 1 tsp water to create an egg wash.
  4. Roll out the pie dough to 1/8 to ¼ inch thick on a floured surface.
  5. Using a 3 1/2 to 4-inch, heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out heart shapes.
  6. Place hearts of dough on the baking sheet.
  7. Brush egg wash around 1/2 the hearts.
  8. Dollop a large tablespoon of jam on the center of 1/2 the hearts on the baking sheet. (Or gently spread Nutella on the heart for the chocolate variation) Try to spread it out, but leave the edges free of jam or Nutella. (DON'T over fill....trust me!
  9. Crumble goat cheese over the jam if using.
  10. Use a knife to cut a small “X” in the middle on the remaining dough hearts to allow for ventilation when baking.
  11. Top each heart with filling with remaining dough hearts, creating a sandwich.
  12. Using a fork, crimp the edges around each pie.
  13. Lightly brush the top of each pie with the egg wash and sprinkle with sugar.
  14. Bake the pies for 20-30 minutes until they are puffed up and golden. Let them cool slightly and enjoy! Note: Watch them because all ovens are different. They are done when they are golden brown.

Notes

  • Can I use other store-bought jam flavors?

Yes absolutely! Use whatever flavor you'd like.

  • Do you have a chocolate variation.

Yes a perfect Valentine chocolate variation would be to use Nutella spread instead of jam.

  • How do you store hand pies?

Store the baked hand pies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3-4 days.

  • Some of my filling oozed out while baking.

That's common. It can either be from over-filling, getting the filling too close to the edge, or, not crimping well enough. But don't worry, there is still filling in there and they are still beautiful and delicious!
